Frequently Asked Questions

What does Carbon Footprint mean?

Today, the term “carbon footprint” is often used as shorthand for the amount of carbon (usually in tonnes) being emitted by an activity such as manufacturing a product or organisation.

What is Embodied Carbon in buildings?

Embodied carbon is the total emissions of Greenhouse gas (GHG) from all energy sources used to mine, log, harvest, extract, process, manufacture, and transport to the construction site.

What is a Carbon Offset?

A carbon offset represents the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on a metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) basis.

Why focus on Embodied Carbon?

Annually, the embodied carbon of building structure, substructure, and enclosures are responsible for 11% of global GHG emissions and 28% of global building sector emissions. Eliminating these emissions is key to addressing climate change and meeting Paris Climate Agreement targets.

How are you reducing your Carbon Emmision?

Carbon reduction can be achieved in several ways, through process emission reductions and technological approaches. In the manufacturing of Thrive® Matter, Universal Fibers® took a comprehensive approach, targeting both pathways along with energy efficiency projects.

Did Universal Fibers® buy its way to Carbon Negativity?

No, they have continuously reduced embodied carbon (from materials) by at least 10% every year since 2016. They have undertaken efficiency projects both large and small to move the needle. The reality is all the efficiency projects alone will not get us to net zero.

Is this approach acceptable for LEED?

LEED is looking to address new market realities. The current draft of LEEDv4.1 integrates offsets with the full diversity of on- and off-site procurement options into a single, streamlined Renewable Energy credit.

What is Carbon Negativity?

Carbon-negative means removing CO2 from the atmosphere or sequestering more CO2 than is emitted. This is a very ambitious goal.

Why target Carbon Negativity?

Thrive® Matter’s carbon negative status means this goal has not only already been achieved, but also Universal Fiber® went significantly further, clearly demonstrating determination to be a market leader in sustainable, climate-friendly products. This is why we’re so delighted to be partnering with them in introducing Thrive® Matter to Aotearoa.

How does Universal Fibers® measure its Emmisions?

To calculate their emissions, they partnered with third-party sustainability experts, for a full carbon footprint assessment.

Have Universal Fibers® stopped focusing on recycled contents?

No, just the opposite. Universal Fibers® have always worked to maximise the recycled content in all their products. As a pioneer in eco-fiber innovation, they were the first in the industry to produce postconsumer nylon 6,6 fiber®.

Are there any trade-offs with selecting Thrive® Matter?

Absolutely no tradeoffs.

No sacrifice in product performance, No Red List ingredients,
and No ingredients listed on the Cradle-To-Cradle CMR list.

So, why Thrive® Matter?

Thrive® Matter is available in both nylon 6 and nylon 6,6 globally.
Universal Fibers® most eco-conscious product to date, Thrive® Matter is high-bulk and lightweight, delivering performance and durability in a wide array of colours. It is also available in exclusive finish options to capture a wide array of aesthetics to meet every need.
